Link Love (powered by “House of Lies”)

This week has absolutely flown by, and aside from getting a few posts up, I haven’t even begun responding to comments.  I apologize for my tardiness in replying.

Between studying for my professional licensing exam next month, work and volleyball, I don’t know where my time has gone.

I’ve still been keeping up with blogs on my reader, though, may not have been commenting very much.  Here are some of my favourite reads in the past week or so.

New Blogs

I love discovering new blogs, and these are some I’ve found the last couple of weeks.  Head on over to send them some love, k?

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Cheers,

Link Love (powered by Sunday To-Do List)

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful weekend.

After being lazy and playing Bejeweled until I reached a new high score, I have finally gotten out of my pajamas and eaten breakfast.  Now, I am ready to face my Sunday and tackle my To-Do List.  I don’t have a lot of big things for this Sunday, just a lot of little things – but little things that would make my life so much easier during the week.

Since, I seem to be more accountable when I write things on my blog, I figured I’d give this a try.

Frugirl’s Sunday To-Do List (Updated at 9:30pm)

  • Put away Laundry – I’ve had a pile of clean laundry that needs to be put away since last weekend.
  • Make Chicken Soup – I roasted an entire chicken on Friday and am really craving some hot, comfort food.
  • Clean Make-Brushes – Definitely need to give those suckers a good wash.
  • Closet clean out – Go through my closet and pick out items I haven’t worn/touched and put aside.
  • Complete Taxes – I found a few more donation receipts, so I need to double check if any thing has changed.
Not a huge change, I will just include it in my electronic file.  I had another tax receipt for a $25 donation.
  • Tidy up Bathroom – Enough said.
  • Make Dumplings – I like to make a big batch on a weekend and freeze them. A batch usually lasts me about a month or two.
Didn’t get to this.  Oh, well.
  • Pack for Boston – I just bought a really awesome make-up/toiletries bag (only $4.47!!), and I can’t wait to use it.
Didn’t get to this either.  But I have all week, so I can do this tmr or Tuesday.
  • Pick up Pantry – Canadian Tire has a good sale ($50), and I desperately need more storage space.
  • Tidy up living area and kitchen – Enough said.  It’s getting a little messy.
  • Finish up post on Re-balancing my Portfolio.  Scheduled for next week! 🙂
Not quite done.  Almost.  Will finish it up tmr.

Money

  • Bridget gives us a peek into her closet.  I am a bit embarrassed that I have a much bigger closet and can’t seem to figure out what to wear some days.  Time to do that clean out! 🙂
  • I’m over Product Parties by Andrea at So Over Debt.  I’ve been invited to a few of these in the last months, and I feel the same way.  I feel a post coming up about this!
  • Gail talks about Women’s Unique Challenges, as March 8th is International Women’s Day. Even though I am not at the point in my life where I am having a family, I see the women around me struggle doing the balancing act, and it’s kinda scary.
  • Young and Thrifty talks about Critical Illness Insurance and Why you Need it.  This is something that I had not previously thought about, but Y&T brings up some good points that I need to give some thought.

Fashion and Beauty

Life

  • Sandy from Yes, I am Cheap tells the US government to stay out of her uterus.  Being a Canadian, I am always taken aback when I hear about how Americans argue and debate birth control and abortion.  Watching that video, I felt like I was stuck in the 1950’s.
  • Eemusing shares her thoughts on the book, Hymn of a Tiger Mom.  Growing up in my household, we had similar rules.  At the end of the day, a parent tries to do what is best for their child in the way they know how.
  • Feather Factor has an interview with HR Director, Tiffany.  Tiffany answers a readers’ questions on resume, job searching, wage equality and more. I really enjoy FF’s interviews, there is such a variety, ranging from designer collections to posts like this one!

Hope everyone has a good weekend :).  I will check back tonight and update my to-do list – wish me luck!

Link Love (powered by the Grammys)

I’m not a huge fan of watching award shows, but I just can’t help and ogle at the celebrities all glammed up on the red carpet. My favourite look was Jessie J and Gwenyth Paltrow, and least favourite was Fergie.

It’s been tough keeping up with my favourite blogs, but here are a few of my favourite reads.

Money

  • Friends or Enemies? Single Mom Rich Mom asks at what point do our friends become our enemy when her son was dishing out money to all his friends.
  • Is Being a Grown-up all you Wanted? Well-heeled asks the question. Even though it’s great being a grown-up, it definitely comes with its pros and cons. Yes, I can eat ice cream for dinner, but, yes, it will also make me sick.
  • Curling is for Cheapsters by Country Girl. I’ve gone curling a few times with work functions and it has been fun – I just never thought about it as a frugal hobby.
  • How did we survive before cell phones, internet and (gasp!) Facebook? asks Debt Ninja.
  • Life is hard but the Fight has Merit by Revanche. She writes about a self-entitled blogger who doesn’t work hard. Instead, the blogger be-littles other people, then whines and complains, refusing to do more to fix her situation.

Fashion and Beauty

  • DIY newspaper clutch by I Spy DIY. Isn’t this lovely?
  • Black and White is my favourite colour combination and I love this look from Kendi. It’s totally something I would wear!
  • Graphite smokey eye look from Rae at the Notice. I’m loving this look and can’t wait to try this with my moonbaked palette as per Rae’s advice!
  • January Favourites shared by Jen. I really enjoy Jen’s reviews and I really want to run out and buy ALL the items!

New Blogs

I’ve been adding a lot of new blogs to my Google Reader feed since its epic failure new look.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy these blogs as much as I have!

  • Nouveau Cheap
I have been obsessed with G.’s blog of affordable drugstore brands that deliver great performance without breaking the bank. G. seems like such a sweet heart and you can really feel her passion for beauty in her writing.
  • Victoria’s Make-up Secret
Victoria is a college student with a great eye for beauty. She also uses a lot of affordable products and makes make-up seem easy and fun. Go on and check out her statement lips look and this beautiful taupe smokey eye! 🙂

Hope everyone has a great weekend 🙂

Link Love (powered by Revlon Plumalicious Super Lustrous Lipstick)

I can’t believe that we have come to the end of January 2012, already. I feel like I sneaked my 2012 goals in just in the nick of time ;).

I LOVE reading about new year goals and recaps.  And even though we can all start to make goals, anytime of the year, I love the potential of an empty calender.  So a lot of the posts below have to do with goals, but not all.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I have!

Money

Fashion and Beauty

  • Sydney shares her list of “mama beauty” items. Since Sydney always looks so put together, I loved taking a peek into her favourite make-up items.
  • G. does a review on these beautiful Royal and Langnickel make-up brushes.  Even at $9/brush, it’s not too bad.  The more I delve into beauty, the more I realize how the right tools are essentials.
  • Don’t you love this beautiful lace blazer?  I feel it’s just such a great mix of feminine and professional polish to it.

Life & Home

  • My Money My Life shares her thoughts on a toxic friendship.  I wrote a long-letter comment and couldn’t get passed the word verification.  Basically, I’ve had to also let friendships die out because at the end of the day, you only have so much time, money and energy.
  • I LOVE the look of these canopy around the bed from This is Glamorous.  Wow!
  • Check out this recipe from Eating and Living for one of my all-time favourite foods – Kimchi.  My sister made me 2 jars of kimchi and I have been finding a reason to eat kimchi for every. single. meal.
  • Shannon is such a strong woman and I love reading her blog Loved You More.  Recently, she has been writing a series on how Bear came to be a part of her family.  From the very first time she met Bear to fighting to keep her little Bear safe.  It is a heart breaking and heart warming read and I encourage everyone to find out more about this extraordinary young woman.

Hope everyone has a good week 🙂

Link Love (powered by Tin Tin and the Holidays)

It’s December 23rd, and you know what that means?  The biggest shopping day in Canada!

And you know what my plans are today?  I’m going in for half day of work, then I’m going to watch Tintin (perhaps by myself), and then go for a nice dinner with BF before we break away for the holidays.

There have been so many great posts around the blogosphere lately, this is only a small sample of my favourites!

Wishing all my readers a very happy and safe holiday no matter what your plans are.  Merry Christmas. Happy Hanukkah.  Happy Winter Solstice.

See everyone in the new year! 🙂

Holiday Related

  • The Holiday Spirit on Budget and Helping others by Blonde on  a Budget.  Cait shares a tradition where her and her friend walk dogs from the local shelter on Christmas and throughout the year.  She is such a sweet heart!
  • Fabulously Broke had my favourite gift guide!  Is she reading my mind?  If you are looking for last minute gift ideas, check it out.
  • Money Rabbit is having a mall-free Christmas for the second year, where she either makes something or bakes something for her loved ones.
  • Andrea at So Over Debt is Over the Holidays.  I share many of her sentiments (being a scrooge myself), and forgot to link back to her when my post published!

Life

  • Krystal has quit her job and is moving to Europe!!  I really admire Krystal’s approach to not only cutting down her expenses, buying a house and her side gigs and couldn’t be more happy for this new step in her life!
  • Fabulously Broke explores why women refuse to marry down.  Lots of great discussion on that post!  For me, what it boils down to is that I want a partner to share my life experiences  with.
  • Financial Uproar shares his views on why women refuse to marry down and calls women out on their double standard.
  • Financial Samurai wonders why a certain woman he met at a bar is rich, intelligent and still single. Are her expectations too high?  Or does she just have too high of an opinion of herself?
  • Married with Luggage has a post telling us to stop apologizing for taking up space.  I didn’t even realize how many times I apologized until I started to pay more attention to myself.  It was an eye-opener!

Fashion and Beauty

  • Jen at From Head to Toe reviews the Revlon Lip Butters and I was convinced!  I grabbed “peach parfair” at my local drugstore and I LOVE it!!  I am now waiting eagerly for it to go on sale.
  • Jen from She Bloggs shares what’s in her cabinet.  I am so nosy and love seeing what’s in other people’s purse/cabinet/make-up stash.  I totally agree with her on the Vaseline and I use it every night 🙂
  • Look for Less features a black and brown ensemble inspired by Pinterst that is perfect for this cold weather.  I love neutrals and love this outfit.
  • I even prefer the Look for Less version of the jersey wrap dress.  I prefer the drapier and less frumpier look – and it costs less!
  • Katherine from Feather Factor gets an email from a reader looking to buy a Chanel bag.  I was tempted to comment, but was afraid I’d just sound clueless and not write something helpful.  The truth is, I cannot fathom coughing up $4,000 for a bag.  Am I weird??

Food

Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday.  Don’t forget my giveaway ends December 25th at midnight! 🙂

Cheers,

Link Love (powered by Hong Kong and Mushroom Cream Soup)

Hello my lovely readers!

I have spent the last 2 weeks in Hong Kong with my family on vacation, and am now up at 4am (thanks to jetlag) enjoying a bowl of Campbell’s mushroom cream soup while catching up to my favourite blogs.

I will have several posts coming up about what I did, what I bought and of course, my expenses for the trip.  🙂

I also got the opportunity to meet with one of my favourite bloggers, Sassy Girl from Girl and City.  She took me to a great dim sum place and then we went shopping afterwards.  I love meeting up with bloggers and she was so sweet and down to earth.

Hong Kong is an amazing place and I definitely recommend you make a trip, sometime.  It is always alive – it’s hard to get away from the hustle and bustle, the  lights and bill boards, and OMG – the food and the shopping.

It’s clean and orderly and everything is just so efficient. It is quite a contrast to the life I know and love in little Toronto, Ontario. I did feel quite home sick at the end of my trip – I longed for my own personal space, my (relatively) spacious apartment, some quiet time and I really missed BF.  It’s so nice to be home 🙂

I kept up with reading blogs from my iPod Touch, but that device is not the greatest for commenting.  So, as I catch up to reading blogs, commenting, replying to comments, I hope you enjoy some of my favourite reads from the past couple of weeks!

Money

Fashion and Style

  • Fabulously Broke shares where she shops in Toronto.  I am going back to Kensington armed with this list!  I always feel so overwhelmed when it comes to thrift shopping – but would love to do it more!
  • Jean at Extra Petite shares her quest for a new work tote, and boy is she ever lovely and $$$ :).  Although I wouldn’t drop that much money on a tote or bag (now), I admire her transparency and thoughtful decision.
  • Kelly from Alterations Needed shares her thoughts on buying duplicates of certain clothes.  My closet is pretty bare, but I have seriously thought of buying duplicates of items I really, really love.

Life

  • Daisy shares some more tips to go green and save money!  I also use old shirts as rags too!  But I never thought to wipe windows with it, what a great idea.
  • Katie aka Red shares thoughts on finding her happy weight.  Exercising and eating well are things I try to balance, as well.  It’s tough!
  • A guest post on Geek in Heels about the difference a glass makes in drinking wine.  This makes a lot of sense, though until only recently, I used to drink wine from water glasses… I guess I have to try this out 😉
  • Wendy shares her thoughts on being thankful.  As you know, I love Wendy’s style – but this post just gives us a tiny glimpse into her past and she seems a more beautiful and strong woman because of where she came from.

New Blogs

I have recently discovered new blogs as the sharing features on the new Google reader are basically non-existent. *tear*  I used to rely heavily on shared items from avid sharers – such as Fabulously Broke and a few friends.  But now, I am left to fend for myself to discover new blogs.  #firstworldproblems, I know.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy these blogs as much as I have!

  • Messy Wands
Xiao shares her skin-care and make-up finds.  I love her fun writing style and I really the way she does her make-up.  As a complete make-up newb, I get intimidated by all the different colours and selection of, well, everything.  Reading make-up and beauty blogs is my way of dipping my toes in the water 🙂
  • A la Peach
I love Peach’s nails!  Her application is impeccable and IMHO, better than most manicures I’ve seen from salons.  For me, I like my nails short and have no patience to paint my fingernails, but I do love to admire from afar.
  • The Zhush
It’s like someone clipped out the best pages of a home and design magazine just for me 🙂
  • {this is glamorous}
I feel like I have a little slice a Paris when I ogle at these pictures. Yes, it is oh-so-glamorous.
  • Budgeting in the Fun Stuff
I just recently discovered Crystal’s blog and I am hooked.  She writes with such a fun style and flair.  And, she recently quit her job to pursue her dreams as a freelancer full time.  Congrats, girl! 🙂
  • Cottons and Curls
I love the tutorials for re-fashioning clothe that Lizzie puts together (seemingly effortlessly!).

Hope everyone has a good week 🙂

Link Love (Powered by Merry-go-rounds)

Oh my!  How did November sneak up on me like that? Time has just flown by!

I have no idea how working parents – especially working moms – do it all.  Even as a bachorlette, between business trips, work, sports, my “Phase II” apartment renovations, hanging out with BF, seeing girl friends and family – I have had little time to spend on anything else.

About a month ago, I was on a writing spree and had almost a month of posts queued up. Which was pretty amazing – I’ve never been so organized with my blog before!

Thank you each of you for your comments.  I read and appreciate every single comment, though I haven’t found the time to respond to them yet.   I really enjoy the sense of community I feel when there is discussion generated about random topics that we all can relate to.

Thank you for making that possible! 🙂

Since I’ve been unable to retrieve my starred items from the new and worse version of Google Reader, I’ve gone through what’s left of my reader to share some of my favourite posts this month.

Please enjoy!

Personal Finance

Fashion

  • Gold spots.  As you know, I LOVE Wendy’s style.  Here she wears a sweater backwards and looks so chic doing it.
  • Hallowe’en Pasts.  I love the creativity of Khatu (of my new favourite style bloggers), and can I just say that the meat dress as AMAZING?!
  • H&M Bargain Hounds-tooth Suit by Extra Petite.  Another one of my style icons.  Great idea for petite ladies (as it runs small), who are on a budget.
  • Economics.  Love the polka dot shirt with the mustard pants.  Kendi, you are amazing!

Life

  • Faux-lopement.  Revanche got married!!!  Congrats, girl! 🙂
  • If you love me.  A beautiful piece of writing from Sassy Girl.
  • October 19.  Molly shares a beautiful post about her favourite church in Paris.  There is something so beautiful and calm about being in a church.
  • Claire meets Aerin.  Geek in Heels just welcomed her daughter, Aerin. 🙂
  • Staycation.  Creature-Gorgeous and her boys enjoy a beautiful retreat in Washington.  Makes me want to visit Washington – it’s such a beautiful city.

Hello, everyone!

I’ve been a little quiet around the blogosphere this past week because I’ve been away on a business trip.  I haven’t gone on too many business trips, so expect a post coming up for my thoughts and tips on going on one.

I have managed to read some of my blog list through reader, but I am so dreadfully behind.  I still thought that I’d share some of my favourite posts  🙂

Link Love (Powered by Camping and a Good Shower)

I haven’t done this in a while and my Google Reader feeder has quite a backlog of starred items I wanted to share!

Thank you to everyone who commented on my post about tipping. I really enjoyed reading everyone’s comments and I’m glad I’m not the only one who struggles with balancing a budget and being fair to those working in our service industry. I realize it’s a tough job, but I also work hard for my money and want to keep as much as possible while still being fair.

Now onto some of my favourite posts 🙂

Life

Personal Finance

  • Well-Heeled talks about asking for a price adjustment. I’ve done this several times, and as always, it never hurts to ask! I also think the term “price adjustment” sounds less crude than, “Can I get these for the cheaper price?” 🙂
  • Sandy is fed up with Bank of America. After reading her post, I would be too.
  • Krystal at Give me my Five Bucks Back has got a new look! Love it!
  • Fabulously Broke has a new series on shopping our closet (love it!), and this is her post on mixing and matching colours.

Food

Fashion

  • Hemmed shared a great quote on being petite. When I say I am petite, people usually think I mean I am small – but it really means I am short. Towering at all 5’2-1/2″. There are lots of women who are plus sized petites. It’s all about proportions and not a dress size.
  • Wendy is SO fashionable and I love her pairing of a simple black dress with a torquoise clutch and the skirt underneath. So chic and effortless!
  • Extra Petite shares her new accessory storage find – a belt ring hanger! I think I will need one of these 🙂
  • Look for Less has a beautiful cowl neck sweater. Both options look great to me!
  • This is a great video on how to cover up acne with makeup. I love how the make up artist explains her philosophy on working on illuminating the great skin the person has, and only covering up with is needed, as opposed to putting a blanket of make-up on the person’s face.

If you have some other great reads, you’d like to recommend, please share in the comments! Hope everyone is having a great weekend! 🙂

Cheers,
